India is keen to join the $5 billion project for setting up an international thermo-nuclear experimental reactor (ITER) in France, the Upper House of the Indian Parliament was informed Wednesday, reports 'Business Standard'.

India, at present, was not a part of ITER project.

"However, the Government has decided to explore participation in the international reactor as a full partner and letters expressing India's interest had already been sent to all ITER partners," India's Power Minister P. M. Sayeed said.

The European Atomic Energy Community, China, Japan, South Korea, Russian Federation and United States of America have chosen Cadarache, France as the site for an ITER, on the basis of fusion technologies.

In response to another question, Sayeed said a few hydro-electric power plants were closed for different time periods owing to a high silt content in the water caused by the recent floods, as a precautionary measure for the safety of projects. The projects closed included 1,500 MW Nathpa Jhakri, 300 MW Baspa, 120 MW Bhaba, 60 MW Gir, 300 MW Chamera-II, 198 MW Baira Siul and 690 MW Salal and 60 MW Rangit-IV.
