The recently concluded defense pact between India and the United States has come under fire from the left parties in the United Progressive Alliance in New Delhi.
The left parties Friday said in a statement the defense agreement with the United States "was fraught with serious consequences" for the country's strategic and security interests.
The Communist Party of India (Marxist) Politburo said the government's pact with the United States would only help serve the US strategic goals in Asia.
"If this agreement is carried forward, India will be placing itself in the same category as Japan, South Korea, and the Philippines -- all traditional military allies of the United States," it said.
The statement said the present agreement was not in accordance with India's commitment to pursue an independent foreign policy and is counterproductive for promoting multipolarity in international relations as stated in the Common Minimum Program.
The Communist Party of India (CPI) said, "India's signing this framework for the defense relationship definitely means compromising our sovereign policy positions and yielding too much to the US.
"India also cannot and should not join the US on the question of missile defense system as it would only serve the US imperialist goals and jeopardize regional and global security".
The All India Forward Block, another constituent of the left block, also reflected the same opinion and objected to the agreement.
