India's security agencies have discovered from radio intercepts that the rebels from the feared United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) have started setting up bases in Nepal which is already reeling under assault from the long running Maoist insurgency, reported 'Hindustan Times, today.
The details of the bases are not yet known though reports say that these camps are located in the Nepalese districts of Sagarmatha, Chitwan, Solokhumbu and a few others. It has been learnt that there are approximately 150 ULFA cadres are living in these camps.
What has alerted the authorities is the news of the presence of the veteran ULFA hand Rana Deuri in Nepal. Deuri who is a trusted lieutenant of ULFA leader Paresh Barua is known to be close to the Communist Party of Nepal.
Nepal has long been considered one in the "golden triangle" plan f the ULFA that planned to use its territory along with Bhutan and Bangladesh.
The ULFA cadres in recent years have been on the run from their bases in Bhutan and Bangladesh. In the last few months even Dhaka has taken action against various Indian insurgent groups which had been reluctant for many years to take any effective action against the insurgent groups from northeastern states of India active on its soil.
Indian security agencies have come up with details of the business establishments and hotels run by the ULFA in Bangladesh. There has been no confirmation of the list of properties by the government of Bangladesh.
"We have long suspected an ULFA-Maoist nexus," said a senior police official in Guwahati and added that "the camps we have come to know of might not be exclusive to ULFA. In all probability , ULFA and Maoists could be sharing them."
