Communist Party of India-(Marxist) CPI-M, a major outside supporter of ruling UPA, voiced opposition to India joining the joint Missile Defence System proposed by the United States.

"The United States is trying to draw India closer through the Next Step in Strategic Partnership (NSSP). It is holding out the promise of cooperation in the sphere of civilian nuclear energy and has offered to sell F-16 and F-18 fighter planes.

"The UPA Government must treat these offers with caution to see whether they conform to national interests and requirements," CPI-M Secretary Prakash Karat told reporters while briefing them on the outcome of the two-day Polit Bureau meeting which concluded here yesterday.

He said the Bureau reiterated its opposition to India joining the Missile Defence System proposed by Washington.

Criticising the Manmohan Singh government for reversing its decision to suspend military supplies to Nepalese armed forces, Karat said Nepal King Gyanendra has "suppressed democracy and has instituted an authoritarian regime".

Observing that release of some political leaders and activists has not led to any relaxation on the curbs on political activities, he said as far as large sections of Nepalese people were concerned, the King did not have any legitimacy.
