India tests fire BrahMos supersonic missile

New Delhi, April 16 -- India Friday successfully carried out a combat mode test firing of the 290 kms range supersonic cruise missile BrahMos from Naval Warships off the Western Coast. The test firing of the missile was carried out during live offshore assets protection exercises carried out by naval warships and IAF fighters off the Goa coast, according to official sources talking to Press Trust of India.

The missile firing was carried out from the warships of the western Naval flotilla and direct hits were recorded on target ships, officials added.

Tenth in the series of the missile test firing, the operation was carried out in the presence of the Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Arun Prakash, Deputy Chief of the Naval Staff Vice Admiral Sureesh Mehta and flag officer commanding the Western fleet.

"It was a text book launch", Dr A Sivathanu, Chief Controller Defence Research and Development Organisation and CEO of the Joint Indo-Russian missile project told newsmen.
