India has decided to ratify the Convention on Nuclear Safety, reported a press release by India's Ministry of External Affair, a copy of which was received by IRNA.
The Convention, which came into force in October 1996, establishes a legal obligation on the part of "State Parties" to apply certain precautionary and operational principles for safe operation and regulation of land-based civilian nuclear plant under their jurisdiction.
The Ministerial statement said India is "fully conscious of the responsibilities arising from the possession of advanced and comprehensive capabilities in the entire gamut of nuclear fuel cycle operations."
It added that New Delhi shares the objective of the Convention on Nuclear Safety "of maintaining a high level of nuclear safety worldwide through the enhancement of national measures and international cooperation".
India has submitted the instrument of ratification to the Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
