IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
New Delhi, March 4, IRNA -- India has made it clear to Pakistan that the peace process was "critically dependent" on the fulfillment of President Pervez Musharraf`s commitment to stop terrorism emanating from his country, India`s External Affairs Minister K Natwar Singh said in the Upper House of the nation`s Parliament, Rajya Sabha Friday. Making a statement on developments in Nepal and his recent visits to Afghanistan and Pakistan, Singh said meaningful progress" has been achieved in the Indo-Pak process and the government intends to continue with it in an atmosphere free from terrorism and violence. Singh said, "The government has made it clear that the process is critically dependent on the fulfillment of the January 6, 2004 commitment of President Musharraf not to permit any territory under Pakistan`s control to be used to support terrorism in any manner." He assured the members of the Parliament in the House that the Srinagar-Muzaffarabad bus service would commence on April 7. The minister clarified that all Indian and Pakistani nationals would be permitted to use this route across the Line of Control. He said the procedure adopted for the service was "without prejudice to our stated position on the issue of Jammu and Kashmir". He added the two countries have agreed to work towards the early restoration of the Munnabao-Khokrapar rail link. "These links would significantly enhance people-to-people contacts, which have provided palpable support to the present process," he noted. Regarding the Baglihar hydroelectric power project in Jammu and Kashmir, he said India pointed out to the Pakistani side that the project was fully in consonance" with the Indus Waters Treaty of 1960, to which India remains committed. 2160/2325/1432
