Nuclear policy based on consensus: PM
IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
New Delhi, Dec 16, IRNA -- Declaring that India was now a nuclear power, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Thursday asserted the country`s policies on nuclear and defence would be based on "continuity and national consensus." "India is a nuclear power and will remain a nuclear power," Singh said in the Rajya Sabha (Upper House of Indian Parliament), according to Press Trust of India-(PTI), emphasising that there would be continuity on India`s nuclear and defence policies on the basis of "national consensus." "I categorically say there is no uncertainty in our nuclear policy," he said. He was responding to Leader of Opposition Jaswant Singh who voiced concern over reported remarks of External Affairs Minister Natwar Singh in Seoul that the previous NDA government was responsible for the Indo-Pak nuclear stand-off belittling the country`s achievement. Singh said, "My assessment was that the reported remarks appear to be in context to questions from journalists and what he (external affairs minister) said was not a statement on foreign policy." 2160-1/1422/1432
