India with no clue on US plan to impose sanctions on 3 entities

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

New Delhi, Oct 25, IRNA -- India has said it was not aware of any
plans by the US to impose sanctions on three Indian entities for
allegedly helping Iran with its nuclear weapons programs.
India said if there had been any such plans, then the "Next Steps
in Strategic Partnership (NSSP)" forum would have been the
appropriate forum to discuss the case.
"We are not aware of plans to sanction three entities as
mentioned in these press reports," Indian External Affairs Ministry
spokesman Navtej Sarna said on Saturday when asked about reports that
the US was considering imposing sanctions on one to three Indian
entities for allegedly aiding Iran`s nuclear programs.
"We have seen these press reports. With the launch of the NSSP,
we now have a forum for discussions on such issues between the two
countries and it is in this forum that all cases of onward
proliferation can be brought up by one or the other country," he said.
Regarding the US sanctions imposed on two Indian scientists, C.
Surendar and Y.S.R. Prasad, both former chairmen and managing
directors of the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited, and
whether the US was seeking "convincing proof" that they were not
involved, he said that in the recently concluded NSSP implementation
group meeting here, no demand was made for evidence to be presented
to the Indian side.
Sarna added: "In fact, the burden of action was on the US as
we have already pointed out to them that the decision in regard to
these entities is based on faulty evidence and must be revoked."
After the US imposed sanctions on the two Indians, India had told
the US that no sale of materials, equipment and technologies was
involved and that no transfer of sensitive technology had taken place.
India had asked the US to review the issue and withdraw the sanctions
and had pointed out to the US that Surender had never visited Iran
while in service or after retirement.
