India test fires supersonic anti-ship cruise Brahmos missile
IRNA
New Delhi, Oct 29, IRNA -- Brahmos, the supersonic anti-ship cruise missile jointly developed by India and Russia, was on Wednesday successfully tested from the Interim Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur near Balasore in the Eastern Indian State of Orissa, India`s Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) sources said. Brahmos has a target range of 290-km with capability to carry 200 to 300 kgs payload of conventional warhead mass, reported Press Trust of India (PTI). It can be fired from multiple platforms which included ship, land, submarine and air, DRDO sources said. Though primarily an anti-ship missile, Brahmos also has the capability to engage shore-based radio-contrast target, they said. Launched from a ship, it can fly up to a height of 14 km at 2-mach speed (twice the speed of sound). It has a preset trajectory but a sensor on the head detects the target and can change its course to strike up to 20 km from the targeted range. The missile also has a device to skim at near-surface level. The missile is marginally over eight meters in length, 670 mm in diameter. "It was a wonderful test flight. This flight was intended to evaluate the precision guidance system and improved fire control system," A.S.Pillai, chief controller, DRDO said. /211 End
