INTRO: Two policeman and a civilian were killed by suspected separatist

militants in an attack against a police post in Indian Kashmir. V-O-As

Jim Teeple reports the two assailants were later killed in a police

counterattack.

TEXT: Two suspected militants attacked the isolated police post, late

Wednesday. The post is about 172 kilometers north of the city,

Jammu, in the Doda District of India's Jammu and Kashmir State.

Two police officers and a sweeper who were on duty at the time were

killed in the attack.

Authorities say their efforts to retake the building were hurt by

shooting from other militants hidden in a nearby forest. Police later destroyed

the building with mortars, killing the two assailants.

The incident is the most serious since militants attacked an army base

in the state, May 14th, killing more than 30 people -- mostly women and

children who were dependents of Indian army personnel.

Since then, Indian authorities have threatened war with Pakistan unless

Islamabad stops militants from crossing into Indian Kashmir. Pakistan

denies providing aid to the combatants.

International efforts to ease the crisis have had little apparent

effect. U-S officials have warned incidents the attack in Doda could

set off a wider military conflict between India and Pakistan. (Signed)
