INTRO: At least 10 people were killed and 30 others left injured after separatist militants attacked a railway station in India's state of Jammu and Kashmir. V-O-A's Jim Teeple reports from our New Delhi bureau, one militant was killed in the attack, but two others escaped.

TEXT: Police in Jammu, the winter capital of India's state of Jammu and Kashmir, say three separatist militants dressed in military clothing sprayed a railway coach at the Jammu station with automatic weapons fire.

Police say the militants targeted security force personnel on the train, but several civilians were also killed or wounded.

The attack is the latest in a series of violent incidents that have killed more than 200-people in Jammu and Kashmir since a historic summit last month between the leaders of India and Pakistan.

The summit ended without agreement on how to settle the Kashmir dispute. India and Pakistan both claim the territory. Indian Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee has strongly criticized Pakistan for what he describes as "cross-border terrorism" in Kashmir.

Islamabad denies supplying Kashmir separatists with anything more than diplomatic and moral support. (SIGNED)
