VOICED AT:
INTRO: A senior team of Indian officials has been
sent to Indian Kashmir to assess the security
situation following the killing of more than 100
people by separatist militants, Tuesday and Wednesday.
V-O-A's Jim Teeple reports security is at an all-time
high in Kashmir following the attacks, which
authorities say were aimed at derailing a cease-fire,
declared last week by the largest militant group
fighting Indian security forces.
TEXT: Home Secretary Kamal Pande arrived in Srinigar
-- the summer capital of India's Jammu and Kashmir
State -- Thursday. He is to meet with a designated
representative of Hizbul Mujahadeen: the militant
group that declared a surprise cease-fire last week.
Tensions are high in Kashmir following this week's
attacks. They are being blamed on militants opposed
to the cease-fire. V-O-A Urdu Service reporter Qaiser
Mirza says security in the Kashmir Valley is at an
all-time high.
// MIRZA ACTUALITY //
Security forces are alert now. They think there might
be another attack from the militant side could take
place in the near future.
// END ACTUALITY //
Indian officials say -- despite the attacks -- they
are willing to talk with Kashmir separatists, without
precondition. (Signed)
