INTRO: Police opened fire on demonstrators in Indian
Kashmir on Monday, killing 10 people. The incident
occurred in a small town about 50 kilometers south of
Kashmir's summer capital, Srinigar. V-O-A's Jim
Teeple reports tensions have been high in the area
since the killing of 35 Sikh men two weeks ago, during
President Clinton's visit to India.
Text: Protesters were demanding the release of the
bodies of five men, who security officials say were
separatist militants involved in the killing of the 35
Sikh villagers. The protesters say the five were
local villagers who were killed by security forces.
Monday's incident took place at Anantnag, where
several thousand Kashmir Muslims had gathered in a
prayer meeting to protest the killing of the five
local men. Demonstrators pelted police with rocks,
demanding the exhumation of the bodies. Witnesses say
police began firing on the crowd without warning.
Police say the first shots came from the
demonstrators.
Local officials say an exhumation of the five bodies
will take place on Tuesday. A curfew has been imposed
on Anantnag and surrounding areas.
Kashmir is claimed by both India and Pakistan. Tens
of thousands have died during a separatist insurgency
over the past 10 years. President Clinton has called
Kashmir "the most dangerous place on earth."
