INTRO: Indian and Pakistani forces are on high alert
Thursday, after Pakistan's firing of surface-to-air
missiles at three Indian military helicopters and
their jet fighter escorts, Wednesday. This followed
Pakistan's downing of an Indian plane Tuesday, killing
16 people. The United States and other nations have
appealed for restraint -- just weeks after India and
Pakistan backed away from a military confrontation in
Kashmir. V-O-A's Jim Teeple has more from our New
Delhi bureau.
Text: Indian Air Force Chief A-Y Tipnis says a major
portion of the wreckage of the Pakistani plane is in
Pakistan. Indian defense officials say the plane was
shot down several kilometers inside Indian territory,
after it failed to respond to warnings and attempted
to flee back across the border. The say the plane was
traveling at a high speed and wreckage is dispersed
over a wide area. Indian Foreign Ministry spokesman
Raminder Jassal says the Pakistani incursion over
Indian territory is provocative.

Pakistan denies its plane was over Indian territory.
Pakistani officials their forces fired at Indian jet
fighters who were escorting three Indian helicopters,
Wednesday. The helicopters were carrying journalists
to view wreckage the Pakistani plane, in an isolated
marsh area, about 97 kilometers southeast of the
Pakistani port Karachi. (Signed)
