- No immediate nuclear tests, says Fernandes The Times of India Saturday 21 March 1998 - NEW DELHI: Ruling out any immediate nuclear tests, newly sworn in defence minister George Fernandes on Friday said the induction of nuclear weapons as also further testing of the Agni intermediate range missile was subject to a strategic defence review (SDR) to be undertaken by a soon-to-be established National Security Council (NSC). However, he said it was difficult to set a time frame for establishing the NSC and on carrying out the SDR.

Unlike the BJP manifesto released on February 3, the national agenda does not make any reference to the development of the Agni missiles.
