Second phase of Agni

The Government has approved the development of second phase of the
intermediate missile Agni, with a longer range of 2,500 kilometeres. The Defence
Minister, Mr. George Fernandes announced this in New Delhi today. The approval
follows the successful completion of the first phase, demonstrating re-entry
technology. In the first phase, Agni has been test fired thrice, for a range of 1,500
kilometres.
Mr. Fernandes said that efforts are on to ensure that there is no adverse effect of
sanction on the missile programme, which is in a very advanced stage of
development. AIR correspondent reports that the Prithvi missile has already been
inducted into the army and the development of the Air Force version is complete.
User trials of Trishul is expected towards the end of this year, while development of
Akash and Nag missiles is expected to be completed next year.
