Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD)
Daily News - 29 July 1998
Prime Minister, Mr. Atal Behari Vajpayee will meet his Pakistani counterpart, Mr.
Nawaz Sharief today. Our Special Correspondent Ganeshan reports from Colombo:
India will follow the approach of building up trust and goodwill with Pakistan. The
South Asian neighbours will proceed on the basis of letters exchanged between them
in June last, on various issues including nuclear weaponisation and Jammu and
Kashmir. Foreign Secretary, Mr. Raghunath has made it clear that ultimately the
dialogue between the leaders will center around building up security and confidence
between the neighbours. He said, India feels that it is in the common interest of both
the countries, the outstanding issues should be resolved in a peaceful manner. India
has made its position very clear regarding the Kashmir issue and has rejected third
party mediation. But Pakistan is insisting only on third party mediation and has linked
up the Kashmir issue with signing of the CTBT, Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty.
One only wonders how with both sides sticking to their stand rigidly and making it
known to everybody, the breakthrough is going to come. The Indian side however, is
quite optimistic. What comes out will be known this evening when the Prime Ministers
are expected to brief the press.
