Germany urges further cuts in global nuclear arms arsenal

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Berlin, Aug 5, IRNA -- German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle on Thursday called for a further reduction in the global atomic weapons arsenal on the occasion of the 65th anniversary of the US bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Westerwelle urged stepped up efforts to ensure that a world without atomic weapons would "not be only a vision but also a reality," according to a foreign ministry statement.

He stressed nuclear disarmament and less emphasis on the role of nuclear strategies had to be prioritized.

"The inconceivable suffering of Hiroshima and Nagasaki has to be a warning for mankind ...," Westerwelle said.

Germany has been pressing for the removal of an estimated 20 American atomic bombs at an air base in the southwestern town of Buechel which are part of a stockpile of about 200 nuclear weapons left in Europe after the end of the Cold War.

Berlin has also urged a review of NATO's controversial nuclear deterrence policy.
