German opposition party urges withdrawal of US nuclear bombs

The liberal opposition Free Democratic Party (FDP) has called for the withdrawal of all Germany-based US nuclear warheads, the online site of Der Spiegel news magazine said Thursday.
The report quoted an internal FDP document -- entitled
Strengthening the Credibility of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty - Pulling out US Nuclear Weapons from Germany'-- in which the FDP parliamentary faction urged the German government "to press the American ally" to withdraw its tactical nuclear weapons from Germany.
Berlin has been reportedly reluctant to push Washington on the nuclear issue, as German-US ties were only recently mended after deep differences over the illegal American invasion of Iraq.
The US has repeatedly ruled out a major reduction of European-based nuclear warheads.
According to the Washington-headquartered Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), there are 480 American nuclear warheads in Europe, of which 130 are stored at the US Ramstein Air Base in southwestern Germany.
The exact number of nuclear warheads and their sites in Europe remain classified.
