Recruiting more personnel for the Federal Armed Forces

Germany - Federal Government

The Federal Armed Forces need good personnel to ensure national and alliance defence. The Federal Government has now adopted a law to improve the remuneration of soldiers, for example, and encourage more people to join the Federal Armed Forces.

Russia's attack against Ukraine in violation of international law, as well as other crises and conflicts, pose a threat to safety and security in Germany and Europe. The Federal Armed Forces need enough staff to be able to ensure that sufficient defence and deterrence capabilities exist in emergency situations.

In order to improve the situation of soldiers, the Federal Cabinet has now adopted a "Law to further strengthen personnel readiness and amend provisions for the Federal Armed Forces". The law must still be passed by the Bundestag.

Improving the financial situation of soldiers

Among other things, the law provides for higher financial compensation for soldiers stationed abroad. This applies in particular to personnel that is to be deployed in the brigade in Lithuania that is to be established.

To encourage more people to join the Federal Armed Forces, soldiers who join for a fixed period of time are to be motivated with a sign-up bonus. The law also provides for improvements with regard to pension entitlements which will put soldiers in a better position after the end of their service.

Improvements for protection of the population

In order to improve responsiveness should defence become necessary, changes to working time regulations are to be made for military personnel. These changes are also designed to provide the necessary degree of flexibility to optimise training of armed forces and allow them to be deployed for protecting the population.
