Egypt calls for reconsidering nuke proliferation, denuclearizing ME

The United Nations Security Council yesterday unanimously approved a resolution condemning both Pakistan and India for the nuclear tests they recently conducted. The UN Security Council, further, called upon the two countries to adopt concrete and swift measures with a view to avoiding armament race.

The resolution, that was unanimously adopted by the Security Council, urged both countries to accede to the nuclear Non Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT).

It, further, called on Pakistan and India to hold bilateral talks to work out their conflict on kashmir. The UN Security Council, however, did not threaten to impose international sanctions on both countries.

Egypt's permanent delegate to the United Nations Dr. Nabil Al-Arabi called for reconsidering the nuclear proliferation around the world, making very clear that in absence of this, NPT will be meaningless, especially in the Middle East region.

Addressing the UNSC, ambassador Al-Arabi underscored the necessity that Israel should accede to the NPT, cautioning that the warming situation in the region of south Asia would overshadow the most hazardous nuclear military imbalance in ME region. He, further, called on Israel to immediately put its nuclear arsenal under the international inspection of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Al-Arabi, also, urged for taking measures necessary to render the Middle East mass destruction weapons free-zone as soon as possible. "The nuclear tests that have been recently conducted by India and Pakistan have demonstrated the far-sighted vision of Egypt while reviewing the nuclear Non Proliferation Treaty (NPT) IN 1995," said Al-Arabi.

Egypt, then, warned against consequences of the indefinite renewal of the NPT and said that giving exceptions for some nuclear weapon-possessed countries means creating apt climate for nuclear race.
