Taipei, Nov. 2 (CNA) Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday strongly condemned North Korea for firing a barrage of missiles earlier in the day that it said severely undermined regional peace and stability.

North Korea launched at least 10 missiles into the Yellow Sea and the Sea of Japan early Wednesday morning, including one that was fired over the disputed maritime border of the Northern Limit Line but landed outside South Korean territorial waters, triggering air-raid alarms on Ulleung Island in South Korea, the ministry said in a press release.

North Korea claimed the missile launches were in response to ongoing South Korea-U.S. military exercises.

North Korea has ramped up military activities escalating tensions in the region since January, including carrying out 29 missile tests, enacting a law enshrining the right to use preemptive nuclear strikes, and preparing to resume nuclear tests, the ministry said.

As a member of the Indo Pacific region, Taiwan will continue to closely monitor the impact of North Korea's provocative actions on the region and cooperate with like-minded countries, to counter the growing trend of authoritarianism and safeguard the rules-based international order and a free and open Indo Pacific, the ministry said.
