Following years of nuclear tests, North Korea has recently decided to abandon its pursuit for nukes, the move which was welcomed by the international community.

Pyongyang has pledged to contribute to global efforts to ban all nuclear weapons tests, North Korea's ambassador to the UN in Geneva Han Tae-song said addressing the UN disarmament body, Conference on Disarmament.

"DPRK will join international desires and efforts for a total ban on nuclear tests," the diplomat said.

The change in North Korean rhetoric occurred ahead of the summit between the country's leader Kim Jong-un and US President Donald Trump scheduled for June. Pyongyang has already demonstrated its determination to abandon nuclear weapons as the country started to dismantle facilities at its only-known Punggye-ri nuclear test site.

In April, North Korea's leader Kim Jong-un announced his plans to end nuclear and missile tests immediately and shut a nuclear test side in the country's north. The world hailed the long-awaited decision of Pyongyang as the tensions on the Korean Peninsula was running high after years of nuclear and missile tests conducted by North Korea.
