North Korea has warned it will take retaliatory measures in case the US imposes sanctions against Pyongyang over an alleged recent hacking attack against US-based Sony Pictures.

North Korea's top military body, the National Defense Commission (NDC), gave the warning to Washington on Sunday after denying North Korean involvement in the hacking.

In a statement, the NDC said the country's army and people "are fully ready to stand in confrontation with the US in all war spaces including cyber warfare space."

"Our toughest counteraction will be boldly taken against the White House, the Pentagon and the whole US mainland, the cesspool of terrorism, by far surpassing the 'symmetric counteraction' declared by [US President Barack] Obama," the statement added.

The hacking incident prompted the US company to cancel the screening of its movie, The Interview, which depicts a fictional CIA assassination plot to kill North Korean leader, Kim Jong-un.

The reaction from North Korea followed criticism from Obama who slammed the action as amounting to cybervandalism.

Earlier this week, Washington said it had evidence proving Pyongyang was behind the hacking.

Pyongyang not only denied the accusation but also proposed a joint investigation with Washington into the cyber attack against the Sony Pictures' computer systems.

North Korea has, however, praised the hackers responsible, but has insisted that the North Korean government does not know where the "Guardians of Peace," as the hackers have identified themselves, are based.

The group threatened to carry out 9/11-style terrorist attacks on US theaters that planned to screen the movie.
