North Korea Test-Fires 3 Missiles Into Sea of Japan

by VOA News June 26, 2014

South Korea says North Korea has test-fired three short-range missiles into the Sea of Japan.

The Defense Ministry in Seoul says the rockets were launched from the Korean Peninsula's east coast on Thursday. The missiles traveled about 190 kilometers before splashing down in the sea.

North Korea has not responded to the reports.

There is no word on what type of missile was fired, or if the launches were a test of a new weapon.

Earlier this year, North Korea fired multiple rockets, including medium-range missiles, during large scale U.S.-South Korean joint military exercises.

Thursday's launches coincided with widespread speculation that Pyongyang may be preparing to conduct its fourth underground nuclear weapon test in violation of U.N. resolutions.

North and South Korea have been bitterly divided since fighting ended in the Korean War was ended by a 1953 armistice.
