North Korea rejects informal UNSC conclusions on human rights situation
19 April 2014, 13:31 -- The North Korean Foreign Ministry has rejected conclusions by an informal meeting of the UN Security Council on human rights in North Korea, as well as a resolution on the issue that's been adopted by the European Parliament.
North Korea's Foreign Ministry has made public a statement to point out that the discussion of the human rights situation in the republic, prompted by the United States, seeks to dent the reputation of the country on the international scene and overthrow the social system that was chosen by the Korean people.
Pyongyang believes it's outrageous that North Korean defectors are used as witnesses in these kinds of discussions, the defectors who committed grave crimes back home. The Foreign Ministry also demanded that the US and the West immediately stop their policy of blackmail against North Korea concerning the human rights situation.
Russia and China abstained from the informal meeting of the UN Security Council on April 17, with most Council member-states suggesting that the report on the human rights situation in North Korea be handed over to the International Criminal Court.
Earlier, Pyongyang criticized the report by the UN Commission on Human Rights, insisting that it is based on the evidence that's been forged by the United States and its allies to distort the true picture of the situation. The United States, known for its interference in many world regions, is the worst transgressor against human rights, the North Korean media point out.
