Better situation in Northeastern Asia to help develop Russian-N Korean ties - Moscow

12 April 2014, 16:38 -- The development of Russian-North Korean cooperation in various spheres depends on the revitalization of situation in Northeastern Asia, director of the Russian Foreign Ministry's First Asian Department Andrei Kulik said.

'Undoubtedly, the implementation of constructive plans to develop our bilateral cooperation in various spheres require an appropriate situation in the region,' Kulik said at a reception dedicated to 102nd anniversary of Kim Il-sung in Moscow. Together with the development of political relations Russia pays much attention to the development of economic relations with North Korea, the diplomat said.

'A vivid example of this is a number of decisions and agreements that our countries have reached, the strategic intention to bring bilateral trade relations to a qualitatively new level, the successful implementation of the Khasan-Rajin project and the interest of South Korean partners to part in it, as well as the gas project,' Kulik said.

Russia also favors making the utmost effort to resume the six-party talks on the Korean peninsula problem, Interfax reports.

'We favor the diplomatic and political solution of every disagreement and for making as much effort as possible to resume the six-party talks,' Kulik stressed.

North Korean Ambassador to Russia Kim Jong Jae in turn said that 'the current situation on the Korean peninsula and the recent events in Ukraine provoked as a result of interference and instigation of the United States has placed everything in order showing who is responsible for the violation of international peace and security and sovereign rights of nations.' Speaking about cooperation with Russia, he said that North Korean authorities 'adhere to the invariable course of the further development strengthening and development of traditional friendship with Russia.'

A number of visits of high-level Russian delegation to North Korea have already taken place. Kim said that 'a visit of Deputy Prime Minister and Presidential Envoy to the Far East Federal District [Yury Trutnev] is scheduled to take place soon.'
