North Korea Sentences American To 15 Years' Labor

May 02, 2013

Authorities in North Korea have announced that a U.S. citizen detained in the North has been sentenced to 15 years of prison labor.

The state-run Korean Central News Agency said Kenneth Bae, an American of Korean background, was sentenced for "hostile acts" against North Korea’s communist regime.

No further details about the alleged offenses were given.

Bae was arrested in November as he entered North Korea’s northeastern port city of Rason.

Friends have described Bae as a tour operator.

The United States had urged North Korea to free Bae on "humanitarian grounds."

The sentencing comes amid high tensions between Washington and North Korea over the North’s nuclear and missile programs.
