North Korea has accused the United States and South Korea of staging cyber attacks against its official websites after reports of disruptions to its internet servers.

North Korea’s official websites, such as the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), the Rodong Sinmun daily, and Air Koryo airline became inaccessible on Wednesday.

"Internet servers operated by our republic have come under daily cyber attack(s) which are persistent and intensive,” KCNA said on Friday, adding the incident coincided with the South Korea-US military drill.

"It is nobody's secret that the US and the South Korean puppet regime are massively bolstering up cyber forces in a bid to intensify the subversive activities and sabotages against the DPRK (The Democratic People's Republic of Korea)," it added.

The accusation came at a time of growing tensions between Pyongyang and Seoul and its allies.

On March 11, Seoul and Washington launched a week-long annual joint military exercise near the Korean Peninsula despite warnings from Pyongyang. The drills involve 10,000 South Korean soldiers and about 3,000 US troops.

North Korea, however, condemned the maneuvers as a launch pad for a “nuclear war.” Pyongyang cut off its communication hotline with Seoul as the drill kicked off.

On Wednesday, North Korea announced that it had scrapped the 1953 armistice and peace pacts signed with Seoul in protest against the military maneuvers.

On March 7, the United Nations Security Council unanimously passed a resolution, drafted by the United States and China, against North Korea over its third nuclear test. The sanctions targeted Pyongyang’s financial dealings and added new names to the UN sanctions blacklist.

On the same day, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un toured two islands near the disputed maritime border with South Korea and said the country was “fully ready to fight a Korean style all-out war.”
