UN diplomats say the United States and China have reached agreement on a new draft to impose further sanctions against North Korea over its recent nuclear test.
American and Chinese diplomats are expected to tell members of the UN Security Council at a meeting later on Tuesday about progress in their talks about Pyongyang’s third underground nuclear test.
"There won't be a vote on Tuesday, but it could come soon. This is a sign that a draft resolution is about to be handed out," said a UN diplomat on condition of anonymity as no official statement has been made.
US ambassador to the UN Susan Rice has been holding talks with Chinese envoy, Li Baodong, over sanctions against the North since it carried out the test on February 12.
The nuclear test drew immediate condemnation from the 15-member council, saying Pyongyang’s move was in "grave violation" of UN resolutions and that "significant action" would be taken against North Korea.
North Korea announced on February 12 that it had successfully carried out its third underground nuclear test, which involved a “miniaturized” device and was conducted in a “perfect manner.”
The nuclear test came after North Korea’s December rocket launch. On December 12, 2012, Pyongyang announced that it had launched a long-range rocket from the Sohae Satellite Launching Station, located in Cholsan County of North Pyongan province, and successfully placed a satellite into orbit.
Pyongyang also carried out two nuclear tests on October 9, 2006 and May 25, 2009.
The country is already under tough UN sanctions over its latest rocket launch in 2012.
