North Korea: Kim Jong Un's Mystery Companion Is Wife
July 25, 2012
by VOA News
North Korean state television says a mystery woman who has accompanied new leader Kim Jong Un in recent public events is his wife.
The station reports Kim and "Comrade Ri Sol Chu" toured a newly-built amusement park in Pyongyang. It appears to be North Korean media's first mention of the leader's wife.
Kim took over leadership of the reclusive state from his father Kim Jong Il, who died in December.
Meanwhile, an International Crisis Group report says there are no clear signs of a conspiracy to overthrow Kim, despite his surprise removal of a top military leader earlier this month.
ICG senior analyst Daniel Pinkston said he does not see any "significant policy changes" in the future, and that Kim has a "firm grip" on power.
The report warns Pyongyang could engage in testing long-range missiles or a nuclear bomb in an effort to bolster Kim's credentials.
