[Inside North Korea]

o Kim Jong-il visited the construction site of the Wonsan County Power Plant and a general food factory under Military Unit No. 534 on July 7. Since July 6, North Korea has been holding events commemorating the 16th anniversary of Kim Il-sung’s passing away (July 8, 1994) at each organ and region.

[Outside North Korea]

o In a July 7 statement by the spokesperson for the Committee for Peaceful Unification of the Fatherland, North Korea denounced the South Korean president’s diplomatic activities concerning the sinking of the Cheonan, a South Korean naval vessel, during the G20 summit and his tour of Central America as 'maneuvers for confrontation against North Korea.' In a comment by the spokesperson for the North Korean Foreign Ministry on July 10, North Korea also played down a presidential statement issued by the UN Security Council, arguing that the Security Council "failed to adopt any resolution, merely issuing a presidential resolution without coming to a conclusion." The country also contended that it would "exert an effort to conclude a peace agreement and achieve denuclearization through the six-party talks in the future.”

[Inter-Korean Issues]

o On July 5, North Korea’s state-run Rodong Sinmun newspaper called the South Korean military’s WMD-PSI training plan a sinister plot for a military clash with, and invasion of, the North and threatened that the North would "respond to it mercilessly and resolutely."
