BEIJING, June 10 (RIA Novosti) - North Korea apologized for the shooting last week of Chinese nationals on its border with China and has promised to severely punish those responsible, Xinhua news agency said on Thursday

North Korea apologized for the shooting last week of Chinese nationals on its border with China and has promised to severely punish those responsible, Xinhua news agency said on Thursday.

The incident occurred on June 4 when a Chinese ship was reported to have illegally crossed the border with North Korea. Three people, from the Chinese city of Dandong, were killed and another was injured.

Beijing has protested the actions of North Korean border guards and demanded a thorough investigation into the incident.

"The North Korean side expressed its condolences to the families of those killed and injured," Xinhua cited the Liaoning provincial government as saying in a statement. "Those responsible will be severely punished."

Beijing and Pyongyang are conducting a coordinated investigation into the incident. North Korea said the preliminary results indicated that the shooting was "accidental."
