China slams actions harming stability on Korean Peninsula
16:2628/05/2010 BEIJING, May 28 (RIA Novosti) - Beijing condemns any actions undermining stability on the Korean Peninsula, Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao said on Friday, Xinhua news agency reported.
"China condemns any act that destroys the peace and stability of the Korean Peninsula," Xinhua quoted Wen as saying during a meeting with South Korean President Lee Myung-Bak in Seoul.
Wen called for all sides involved in the situation on the Korean Peninsula to "show restraint and not allow escalation" over the sinking of a South Korean warship, and to focus on long-term issues, namely the six-party talks on the denuclearization on North Korea's nuclear program, which stalled last April, as well as the Korean peace efforts.
South Korea's 1,200-ton Cheonan corvette sank near the disputed Northern Limit Line in the Yellow Sea on March 26 with the loss of 46 lives. After an investigation, Seoul accused North Korea of firing a torpedo from a submarine at the vessel.
The Korean Peninsula is neither "at war, nor peace," since the 1950-1953 war ended in the signing of a ceasefire agreement between North Korea and the United States, which was fighting the war under the UN flag.
South Korea plans to apply to the UN Security Council for sanctions against Pyongyang for its alleged involvement in sinking the Cheonan corvette.
