China calls to resume talks on N.Korea

RIA Novosti

13:4611/05/2010 BEIJING, May 11 (RIA Novosti) - China has called to resume six-party talks on North Korea despite the constantly changing situation, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu said Tuesday.

"China hopes that whatever changes take place in the situation, the interested parties will be able to jointly create conditions for the soonest possible resumption of six-party talks," she said.

A South Korean warship sank under unexplained circumstances in the Yellow Sea near the disputed maritime border with North Korea in late March, and it is not ruled out that North Korea could have been involved in the incident.

Talks on North Korea's nuclear program, involving Russia, Japan, China, the United States and the two Koreas, stalled last April when Pyongyang pulled out of the negotiations in protest against the United Nations' condemnation of its missile tests.

China, which chairs the six-party negotiations group, earlier said talks could resume in the first half of this year, but South Korea has said the talks could only resume after the investigation into the South Korean naval ship's sinking is completed.
