[Inside North Korea]
o On February 1, North Korea held a rally at April 25 Culture Hall in Pyongyang to have Kim Jong-il as a candidate for constituency no. 333 for the 12th-term Supreme People’s Assembly. Top military officers including Cho Myung-rok (head of the General Politburo of the People’s Armed Forces) and Kim Il-chul (Minister of the People’s Armed Forces), and other men in uniform were on hand.
[Outside North Korea]
o On January 27, a delegation of the Russian Federation’s Foreign Affairs Ministry headed by Deputy Minister Alexei Borodavkin in charge of Asia-Pacific affairs visited North Korea.
[Inter-Korean Issues]
o On January 30, North Korea officially declared its position on inter-Korean relations in a statement by the Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of the Fatherland:
- Firstly, annul all agreements related with resolution of political and military confrontation between the South and North; and
- Secondly, terminate the 'South-North Basic Agreement on Reconciliation, Non-aggression, and Exchanges and Cooperation' and provisions on the maritime military demarcation line in the West Sea contained in its annex.
