Taipei, April 6 (CNA) The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) toughened its rhetoric Monday over North Korea’s firing of a rocket over Japan a day earlier, condemning the Communist country’s move as sabotaging the stability of East Asia.
Following Vice Foreign Minister Javier C.S. Hou’s expression of grave concern over the incident earlier at the Legislative Yuan, the MOFA officially issued a statement later on Monday to condemn Pyongyang’s rocket launch.
“As a member of East Asia, the Republic of China (ROC) deeply regrets North Korea’s action of sabotaging the stability of East Asia and therefore voices condemnation of such behavior,”said MOFA spokesman Henry Chen.
Pyongyang’s rocket launch not only violated the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1718, but also created tension and impacted the security and stability of the Asia Pacific region, the MOFA said in a press release.
It also called for the relevant parties in the world to act according to U.N. regulations regarding the matter, and to exercise self-restraint and be rational in seeking solutions to differences.
The ROC reiterated that problems on the Korean Peninsula should be resolved by means of negotiations in order to maintain regional peace, stability and prosperity, the statement added.
