Taipei, April 6 (CNA) The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed grave concern Monday over North Korea's firing of a rocket over Japan the day before, saying the move threatens peace and security in Northeast Asia.

Deputy Foreign Minister Javier C.S. Hou called for vigilance by the relevant parties in the world regarding the matter.

Hou made the remarks at a meeting of the Legislative Yuan's Foreign and National Defense Committee, during which opposition Democratic Progressive Party Legislator Tsai Huang-liang asked why the foreign ministry had not publicly condemned Pyongyang's "provocative" move, as other nations had done.

Hou responded that the foreign ministry had issued a newsletter April 2, before the rocket was launched, calling for Pyongyang to exercise self-restraint and seek solutions to differences by means of dialogue.

The foreign ministry planned to issue a formal statement about North Korea's actions later in the day, Hou told Tsai.
