  • North Korean media reported that in January 2009 Kim Jong-il gave on site guidance at Wonsan Youth Power Station, Daean Heavy Machine Complex, Geumsung Tractor Factory, Pyongyang Silk Mill, Pyongyang Gum Factory and Youth No.1 Power Plant of the Yeseong River .

Inter-Korean Affairs

  • Through the Statement of the DPRK’s Committee for the Peaceful Reunfication of the Fatherland on January 30, the DPRK announced that it would nullify all agreements for eliminating the political and military confrontational status quo and abandon the articles relevant to the maritime demarcation line on the West Sea stated in the Agreement on Reconciliation, Non-Aggression and Exchange and Cooperation between South and North Korea (Effectuated on February 19, 1992).

Foreign Affairs

  • North Korea asserted that the U.S. ’s bellicose Northeast Asia policy is to be blamed for the lingering Cold War system and criticized that the U.S. ’s claims to reduce nuclear armaments were based on lies and hypocrisy.
  • The DPRK demanded that the Obama administration sever itself from the neo-conservative line and pursue a different policy.
  • North Korea criticized Japan ’s movement to revise its outline plan for defense and its claim on the sovereignty over Dokdo.
  • Russian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Alexei Borodavkin (chief delegate to the six-party talks) paid a visit to North Korea from January 27 to 30 and met North Korean Minister of Foreign Affairs Park Eui Chun.
