Weekly Report on North Korea No. 885 (March 31 to April 6, 2008)

Internal Affairs

Chosun Shinbo reported on April 3 the recent activities of the Chosun Industrial Art Studio and its plan to hold an industrial design exhibition to commemorate the 60 th anniversary of the founding the North Korean regime.

On April 6, Kim Jong Il inspected a company of KPA Unit 350 and a recruit training subunit of KPA Unit 776, reported the Central Broadcasting Station.

North Korea held a reporting convention at the Central Workers’ Hall to mark the 15 th anniversary of Kim Il Sung’s announcement of “10-Point Programme of the Great Unity of the Whole Nation for the Reunification of the Country” and praised the accomplishments of Kim Il Sung and Kim Jung Il, reported Central Broadcasting Station and Pyongyang Broadcasting Services on April 5. At the convention, the country also emphasized the implementation of the June 15 Joint Declaration and October 4 Declaration.

Inter-Korean Affairs

Chosun Shinbo, in its report on April 1 titled “Attempts to reverse the trend by an amateur regime,” reviewed the commentary run on Rodong Sinmun the same day and denounced South Korean government’s policy toward Pyongyang in the light of the Six-party Talks.

On April 1, North Korea criticized South Korea ’s policy toward it in a Rodong Sinmun commentary titled “What the South authorities would get by confronting Pyongyang is its destruction”, mentioning President Lee Myung-bak by his name.

Korean Central News Agency reported the Navy Command of KPA issued a press release on April 3 assailing the South Korean forces for infiltrating the North Korean waters and warned that the North would take “unexpected countermeasures.”

Korean Central News Agency and others reported on April 3 that KPA replied a South Korean telephone message on April 2, which expressed its regrets over the North’s telephone notification on March 29.

On April 5, Rodong Sinmun, in a signed editorial titled “Establishment of a correct view on the Korean people is a primary requirement for developing inter-Korean relations” put an emphasis on “the way of thinking putting the nation above anything else” in pursuing inter-Korean relations.

Foreign Affairs

North Korea continued denouncing the United States citing the interference of hard-line conservatives in the Six-party Talks and their attempts to invade the North.

North Korea criticized Japan in all directions through state-run media, including Rodong Sinmun and Central Broadcasting Station, by taking on such issues as sanction against Pyongyang , Japan ’s past wrongdoings and distortion of history.
