【Inside North Korea】
o On October 22, North Korea’s Rodong Sinmun featured an editorial titled “Master Science and Technology for a New Quantum Leap,” in which the newspaper emphasized, “Science and technology is a critical, determinative link in the nation’s economic development, as well as an engine of national prosperity.” The editorial went on to assert, “[We] ought to value [our] scientists and engineers and provide them with good working and living conditions.”
o On October 23, the North Korean Central Broadcasting Station (KCBS) reported, "In celebration of the 55th anniversary of the founding of the State Academy of Sciences of the DPRK, a national science and technology presentation meeting has been launched, with its opening ceremony taking place in the Grand People’s Study House in Pyongyang. At the meeting, presentations will be made on over 140 scientific and technological achievements recognized for their excellence at the more than 40 divisional presentation meetings that took place in August this year.”
o On October 23, the KCBS stated "A national meeting of the secretaries of the cells of the Workers’ Party of [North] Korea (WPK) is to take place in Pyongyang,” and propagandized, “This meeting will renew the activities of the party’s cells, which are the party’s smallest subdivisions and fundamental organizations. The meeting is of great significance in that it will further strengthen the WPK as an invincible party that can boast of 100 victories in 100 battles in brilliantly completing the undertaking of [building] socialism.”
o On October 24, the North Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported "The 54th plenary meeting of the central committee of the Union of Agricultural Workers of Korea took place in Pyongyang on October 24,” and added, “Discussed in the plenary meeting were tasks to reinforce socialist education in response to the needs of the Songun [military-first] era.”
o On October 26, the KCNA reported, "The Central Committee of the Korean General Federation of Science and Technology held a national science and technology presentation meeting and exhibition on mushroom cultivation in Pyongyang on October 24 and 25,” adding, “Presentations were delivered on over 100 experiences and successes.”
【Outside North Korea】
o On October 22, the North Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) quoted a speech delivered by a North Korean delegate at a meeting of the First Committee of the 62nd Session of the UN General Assembly on October 15 to stress that “the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula is the behest of the late President Kim Il-seong and it is the consistent goal of the DPRK to solve the nuclear issue through dialogue and negotiations.”
o On October 24, the KCNA reported, "The DPRK-EU economic symposium was held in Pyongyang on October 23 and 24.” The news agency also said, “Officials from our [the North Korean] Chamber of Commerce and other relevant institutions, delegations from the European Commission and the European Parliament, diplomats from a range of European nations, and economic experts took part in the symposium.”
o On October 24, on the occasion of the 62nd anniversary of the founding of the United Nations, the North’s Rodong Sinmun claimed, “Unilateralism and arbitrary and high-handed practices are becoming more rampant.” The newspaper also insisted that in order to overcome the alleged infection, “The principles of respect for sovereignty, equality, territorial integrity and reciprocity should be thoroughly upheld,” and called for the “elimination of double standards in international relations.”
o On October 25, in commemoration of the Chinese People’s Volunteers’ entry into the Korean war, Rodong Sinmun stated, "[We] remember their heroic combative spirit, camaraderie, and brilliant feats,” and contended, “Reinforcing and developing the DPRK-China friendship generation after generation is the will of the leaders of the two nations, and the friendship will continue to solidify and develop thanks to efforts of the parties and governments of the two countries.”
【Inter-Korean Issues】
o On October 25, North Korea’s Rodong Sinmun said, “Under the banner of uriminzokkiri, or "by our nation itself," the reunification movement has reached new heights. The newspaper also claimed, “One’s attitude and stance on the idea of uriminzokkiri is a litmus test to determine whether the person is a patriot or a betrayer,” and, “Whoever ventures into the currents of the June 15 reunification era will become a patriot, while whoever fails to do so will be left behind the times as a failure.”
