Inside North Korea
o Regarding Events for the 57th Anniversary of the Korean War
- On June 25, an anti-US rally took place at Pyongyang Stadium, and among those present were Choe Tae-bok, chairman of the Supreme People’s Assembly, and Kim Yong-dae, president of the Korea’s Socialist Democratic Party.
- On June 25, the North Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) contended, “The Korean War was an intrusive war that was sedulously prepared and intentionally provoked by US imperialists to realize their ambition of world domination.”
- On July 1, the North Korean Central Broadcasting Station (KCBS) reported, “On the occasion of the month of anti-US joint struggle from June 25-July 27, an art exhibition on the theme of class education opened at the Pyongyang International Cultural Center.”
o On June 26, the North Korean broadcast media reported, “Preparations are actively being made in every corner of the nation to ensure the successful election of deputies to the People’s Assemblies of the provinces/cities under direct control of the national government, cities/districts, and counties.”
Outside North Korea
o North Korea’s Report on the Issue of Frozen Funds in the BDA and the results of IAEA Inspectors’ Visit to North Korea
- On June 26, a spokesperson for North Korea’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said, “Now that [our] funds frozen in Banco Delta Asia (BDA), Macao, have been wired as we demanded, the troublesome issue of the frozen funds has at last been resolved,” and commented, “As the issue of the frozen funds has been resolved, we too, in accordance with the principle of ‘action for action,’ will take action to implement the February 13 Agreement.”
- On June 26, the North Korean Central Broadcasting Station (KCBS) and Pyongyang Broadcasting Service (PBS) reported, “A working delegation of the International Atomic Energy Agency headed by Deputy Director General Olli Heinonen arrived in Pyongyang on June 26.”
- On July 1, The Chosun Sinbo, or The People’s Korea, which represents the position of North Korea as the bulletin of the General Association of Korean Residents in Japan, reported, “On June 30, Olli Heinonen, leader of the IAEA working delegation, said he was satisfied with the results of the discussion with North Korea.”
o On June 26, the North Korean Central Broadcasting Station (KCBS) said, “To Chu Ji, Korean woman who had been abducted to Japan, returned to Pyongyang by air on June 26,” and mentioned, “She lived in Japan three years and seven months, but the nation was so dangerous [to live in] that she decided several times [to return] even at the penalty of death so that she may die with her children by her side at her deathbed and finally returned.”
o On June 27, Rodong Sinmun said, “Recently Japanese reactionaries’ dogged, evil and cruel maneuvers to get rid of the General Association [of Korean Residents in Japan] has entered a frenzied phase,” and contended, “In recent years, their methods and temperaments have become even more evil and cruel to the point of labelling the officials working at the headquarters of the General Association as criminals.”
o On July 1, a spokesperson for the North Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed its position [on Japan], saying, “[Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo] Abe’s and his partisans’ recent maneuvers to persecute the General Association has reached the most reckless and desperate level possible, which is entirely unacceptable, and we [North Korea] will never simply sit back and watch [their] persecutory maneuvers.”
Inter-Korean Issues
o On June 25, Rodong Sinmun published an editorial titled “Discussion of the truth of the Northern Limit Line” in which it asserted, “The Northern Limit Line (NLL) is an illegal, lawless and phony line that the intrusive US imperialist forces drew in our territorial waters at their own discretion,” and emphasized, “In the event of another armed clash on the West Sea, it will escalate into a full-scale war involving ground and air battles that will threaten the survival of the nation.”
