o Regarding the 43rd Anniversary of Kim Jeong-il’s Commencement of Work with the Central Committee of the Workers’ Party of Korea (June 19)

- (June 18) A national meeting was held at the April 25 House of Culture with high-ranking officials from the Party, the Cabinet and the Army attending, including Kim Yong-nam, Yang Hyong-sop and Ri Yong-mu.

- (June 18) The North Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported that the military attache corps stationed in North Korea “delivered a congratulatory letter to Kim Jeong-il.”

- (June 19) North Korea stressed in Rodong Sinmun, “The critical guarantee [for victory] in today’s battle is, first, second and third, faithfully continuing to uphold Kim Jeong-il’s politics.”

o (June 20) In its editorial marking the 10th anniversary of the release of On Preserving the Juche Character and National Character of the Revolution and Construction published by Kim Jeong-il in June 1997, Rodong Sinmun emphasized, “[We] should ensure foreign elements that have no connection with us can never endure to reside [alongside us].”

o Upholding Anti-Americanism Ahead of Korean War Anniversary

- (June 20) The North Korean Central Broadcasting Station (KCBS) reported, “An endless stream of workers from all walks of life are visiting the Sinchon Museum to hone their burning resolve to take revenge against the imperialist US a thousand times over.”

- (June 23) The North Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) insisted, “Newly found in Susan-ri, Kangso-gun, South Pyongan Province, are the remains of 98 patriots and civilians who were slaughtered by the US imperialists and class enemies during the National Liberation War [the Korean War].”

o North Korea Reported Facts and Results of the Visit to North Korea by US Assistant Secretary of State Christopher Hill (June 21?22)

- (June 21) The KCNA promptly reported that “Assistant Secretary Hill arrived in Pyongyang at 12:35,” and also reported on June 22 that he had departed.

- (June 23) A spokesperson for North Korea’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs presented a positive evaluation of Assistant Secretary Hill’s visit to the North, commenting, “[We] discussed ways to reinforce cooperation in the area of financial transactions in the future, exchanged opinions on the implementation of the February 13 Agreement and follow-up measures, and agreed to strengthen contacts and consultations in the future.” He also expressed [the North’s] stance on the timeframe for a meeting of six-party chief delegates and a six-party foreign ministerial meeting in connection with the six-party talks.

o (June 20) Regarding Japan’s move to present a bill for the Basic Space Law in an extraordinary session of parliament in September, Rodong Sinmun contended, “Japan’s attempt to militarize space will have a severe influence on the situation on the Korean peninsula and in the Asian region.”

o (June 22) Regarding Japan’s launch of a committee to win official elections within international organizations as a means to strengthen its clout in such organizations, Rodong Sinmun denounced the move as a “fruitless attempt” and emphasized, “Japan must first gain trust in the international community.”

[Inter-Korean Issues]

o (June 21) The navy command of North Korea issued a false statement in which it insisted, “South Korean naval vessels are violating our territorial waters,” and warned, “Should our warnings advance into stern action, the South Korean government will have to shoulder full responsibility,” and threatened a resultant “third West Sea clash.”
