o Inside North Korea
(June 5) The North Korean Central Broadcasting Station (KCBS) reported, “To mark the 70th anniversary of the victorious battle in Pochonbo, the [North] Korea Stamp Corporation issued a commemorative stamp.”
(June 6 - 7) The North Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported, “Kim Jeong-il attended the 10th competition of art groups of servicemen's families and enjoyed performances by art groups of the families of servicemen of Unit 313, Unit 757 and Unit 593 of the KPA. He also visited North Pyongan Province’s Pukjung and Ragwon Machine Complexes as well as Sinam Co-op Farm in Ryongchon County to provide on-site guidance.
(June 7) The North’s KCBS said, “Construction started to improve Songdowon Beach before summer comes as per Kim Jeong-il’s instruction.”
(June 10) North Korea’s Rodong Shinmun asserted in an editorial that “Our [North Korea’s] people’s conviction in socialism is an invincible weapon that can defeat any enemy and a powerful driving force to overcome trials and bring about a new era of triumph and prosperity.”
o Outside North Korea
(June 4) The North Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported, “At the 15th session of the United Nations’ High-Level Committee on South-South Cooperation (May 30), our [the North Korean] representative maintained that ‘the UN should take practical measures to effectively leverage the immense potential for economic and technological cooperation that developing nations have.’”
(June 8) The North Korean Central Broadcasting Station (KCBS) emphasized, “Japan has recently been attempting to participate in the activities of the International Criminal Court, but since Japan is a war criminal that has invaded Asian nations, including our nation [North Korea], and massacred numerous civilians, it ought to cleanse itself of its past crimes and make a new start before brining the words ‘peace and the rule of law’ to its lips.”
(June 9) The North’s KCBS said, “At the Great People’s Hall on June 8, He Yong, vice secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC), met and talked with a delegation from the Workers’ Party of Korea (WPK) that was visiting China (chief delegate: Kim Jin-ha, secretary of the Pyongyang City Committee of the WPK), during which he stressed, ‘It is the CPC’s steadfast policy to develop friendly and cooperative China-DPRK ties.’”
o Inter-Korean Issues
(June 4) North Korea’s Pyongyang Broadcasting Service (PBS) said, “[Endeavoring] to achieve the unification of our motherland by adhering to the idea of ‘by our nation itself’ is Kim Jeong-il’s firm faith and resolve,” contending, “The railways and roads stretching along the east and west coastlines and the opening of a land path for Mt. Geumgang tours are a symbol of national cooperation.”
(June 10) The Central Committee of North Korea’s Democratic Front for the Reunification of the Fatherland alleged in a statement, “The South Korean people should turn out in an active battle to expel the US troops and bury pro-US, conservative forces by reviving the spirit and courage that fuelled the anti-US and anti-dictatorial flames during the June Protest [in 1987].”
