o Inside North Korea

(May 28) The North Korean Central Broadcasting Station (KCBS) reported, “In response to the Party’s call for full support for rural communities, high officials and civil servants [of all ranks] within national ministries are giving powerful support to rural communities.”

(June 1) The North Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) quoted Minju Josun [Democratic Korea] as saying, “The cabinet announced its decision to adopt a set of passenger insurance regulations aimed at contributing to the safety of passengers as well as providing guidance and order in the passenger insurance industry in accordance with the Party’s and nation’s policy regarding insurance.”

(June 2) The North’s KCBS reported, “Kim Jeong-il, accompanied by Pak To-chun, chief secretary of the Jagang Provincial Committee of the [Workers’] Party [of Korea] and Kim Ki-nam, secretary [of the Central Committee] of the WPK, provided onsite guidance at Hungju Youth Power Station No. 2, which was recently constructed in Kanggye City, Jagang Province, as well as at the Kanggye Duck Plant and the Kanggye Wine Plant, visited historical revolutionary sites in Kanggye city, and attended a performance by an art propaganda troupe of Jagang Province.”

(June 3) North Korea’s Rodong Shinmun emphasized, “As capitalists’ maneuvers for ideological and cultural intrusion are evil and cruel, anti-revolutionary, ideological and imperialist bombardments intended to paralyze people’s healthy ideological mindsets and to fragment anti-imperialist, self-reliant nations, [we] ought to thoroughly crush them and press ahead with the building of a powerful nation.”

o Outside North Korea

(May 30) The North’s Rodong Shinmun said, “Japan has recently embarked on a full-scale attempt to take part in the activities of the International Criminal Court,” and stressed, “Japan, before bringing the words, ‘peace and the rule of law,’ to their lips, should cleanse themselves of their past crimes committed against humanity.”

(May 31) The North Korean Central Broadcasting Station (KCBS) reported, “On May 30, the Cuban and Indonesian ambassadors to the DPRK and members of the [two] embassies helped with farming at the Hwasong Co-op Farm in Pyongyang and the Yaksu Co-op Farm [in Kangso County], respectively, and made related donations.”

(June 2) The North’s KCBS reported, “Kim Jeong-il sent a congratulatory telegram regarding the reelection of Bashar Al-Assad as president of the Syrian Arab Republic and condolences regarding the decease of Chinese Vice Premier Huang Ju.”

o Inter-Korean Issues

(May 31) North Korea’s Pyongyang Broadcasting Service (PBS) published an editorial titled “The people’s patriotic aspirations and resolve are a resource in its battle for the reunification of the fatherland” in which it said, “The June 15 era of reunification* is an era of self reliance-oriented reunification in which the idea of ‘by our nation itself’ is the spirit of the times,” and asserted, “No one can block the path of [our] march to safeguard the nation’s dignity and autonomy.”

*Translator’s Note: Allegedly, the current era wherein North and South are to join forces to accomplish reunification based on the June 15 Joint Declaration.

(June 1) The North Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported, “The 21st North-South Ministerial Talks closed on June 1, and both parties confirmed that if old ideals and behaviors are not jettisoned in the June 15 era, no issue can be resolved and no progress can be expected in North-South relations.”
