o Inside North Korea
(May 22) The North Korean Central Broadcasting Station (KCBS) reported, “The construction of the main dam of the Wonsan Youth Power Station has been completed, and the construction of subsidiary dams, structures and buildings, which is in its final stages, is making dynamic progress.”
(May 25) North Korea’s Rodong Shinmun printed an editorial marking the 40th anniversary of the publishing of “On the Direction of Today’s Propaganda Activities of the Party,” a painstaking work by Kim Il-sung, in which it emphasized, “The Songun [military first] philosophy and the Songun line on which the Juche [self-reliance] ideology is based are the treasured sword of unfailing victory in revolution and construction.”
(May 26) The North Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported, “The Cabinet recently announced its decision to adopt the enforcement regulations of law on Red Cross operations in order to accurately execute the law.”
o Outside North Korea
(May 23) The North Korean Central Broadcasting Station (KCBS) reported, “A protocol of the 11th meeting of the Forestry Subcommittee of the Inter-Governmental Committee for Cooperation in Trade, Economy and Science & Technology between the [North] Korean and Russian Federation governments was signed in Pyongyang on May 22.”
(May 26) North Korea’s Pyongyang Broadcasting Service (PBS) reported, “The 21st Congress of the General Association of Korean Residents in Japan was held at the Korean House of Culture in Tokyo May 25–26, and a letter to Kim Jeong-il was adopted.”
(May 26) The North Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said, “The opening ceremony for Iran-Korea [DPRK] Friendship Week took place in Teheran on May 20, and the general director of the Artistic and Cultural Cooperation of the Organization of Culture and Islamic Relations of Iran emphasized in his speech that ‘the fight by the peoples of such self-reliant nations as Iran and Korea [DPRK] against the US’s maneuvers to conquer the world will surely triumph.’”
o Inter-Korean Issues
(May 22) North Korea’s Pyongyang Broadcasting Service (PBS) contended, “Peace is foundational to the securing of the reunification of our father land and the shared prosperity of the nation, and thus all the [Korean] people, by turning out in a more powerful drive in the battle to safeguard peace, should accelerate the coming of the day of self-reliance, reunification and national prosperity.”
(May 24) A spokesperson for the North’s Korean Council for Reconciliation and Cooperation said in a statement, “Regarding the pilot operation of trains between the North and South, South Korea’s extreme right wing and conservative forces and conservative media have labelled the operation a ‘trial operation with the North Korean nuclear issue shelved,’ and alleged that ‘[any attempt] to use a North-South cooperative project for political purposes is a serious provocation and a maneuver to hamper the cooperative project, and [those who make such an attempt] will be held responsible for the results [incurred by the attempt].’”
