o Inside North Korea
(May 10) The North Korean Central Broadcasting Station (KCBS) reported, “Hwanghaenam-do, or South Hwanghae Province, started planting rice seedlings,” and added, “Workers at agencies, companies and factories in the province tuned out in a dynamic drive to help plant rice.”
(May 12) North Korea’s Pyongyang Broadcasting Service (PBS) said, “As a new large mushroom plant has been put into operation in the City of Naseon, there is now another solid foundation on which the people may lead a richer dietary life.”
(May 12) North Korea’s Central News Agency (KCNA) said, “Recently [North] Korea issued a new postage stamp priced at 85 won reflecting [a national campaign] to prevent avian influenza, which has been eliciting worldwide concern,” and propagandized, “In [North] Korea, a project to forestall bird flu is powerfully pursued every year as a far-reaching campaign under the leadership of the State Emergency Quarantine Committee.”
(May 13) The North’s KCBS reported, “In April and May, which are the months of herb cultivation, projects to grow and gather herbs as well as to nurture herb resources are powerfully underway.”
o Outside North Korea
(May 10) The North Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said, “"A KCNA delegation (headed by Deputy Director Kim Chang Gwang) left Pyongyang on May 10 for China.”
(May 12) The North’s Pyongyang Broadcasting Service (PBS) reported, “A Chinese delegation from the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade arrived in Pyongyang on May 12 to take part in the 10th Pyongyang Spring International Trade Fair, and on the same day, delegations from Russia, Syria, Indonesia and other nations also arrived.”
(May 13) North Korea’s Rodong Shinmun denounced, “The US President and Japanese Prime Minister’s confirmation of their alliance at a summit and agreement to strengthen cooperation in their North Korean policy and Iraqi issues constitute criminal collusion.”
o Inter-Korean Issues
(May 11) The North Korean Central Broadcasting Station (KCBS) reported, “The 15th reunion of families and relatives separated [by the Military Demarcation Line] started at Mt. Geumgang on May 9, and families from the North and South, at this collective meeting, shared their heart-felt love.”
(May 12) The North’s Rodong Shinmun stressed, “In order to observe the anniversary of the adoption of the June 15 Joint Declaration in a more meaningful and honorable manner, all Koreans living in the North and South as well as overseas should more powerfully advance toward the execution of the three tasks of cherishing the nation, defending peace and achieving unity.”
(May 12) North Korean Central TV reported, “From May 8 through 11, the 5th North-South general-level military talks took place at Tongilgak [a pavilion on the North Korean side of Panmunjom, the truce village], and a joint press release was adopted that included agreements on such issues as the adoption and effectuation of a tentative written agreement to militarily ensure pilot train operation between North and South on May 17, 2007.”
