o Inside North Korea
(May 1) The North Korean media, including the Korean Central Broadcasting Station (KCBS), reported, “A national reporting rally to celebrate the 117th May Day took place at Central Workers’ Hall on May 1 with officials of the Party and Cabinet present, at which the building of a powerful nation in a way that improves residential living conditions was emphasized.”
(May 3) North Korea’s Rodong Shinmun propagandized, “The Workers’ Party of Korea (WPK), by pushing forward with ideological projects, is crushing imperialists’ anti-republic [anti-DPRK] maneuvers, firmly abiding by ‘Korean- style [DPRK-style] socialism,’ and making progress in building a powerful nation.”
(May 6) The North’s KCBS said, “The 7th May 21 Architectural Festival is scheduled to take place May 10 through 15 in Pyongyang,” and added, “The festival will include prizes for architectural designs and a programming competition for the modernization of architectural design.”
o Outside North Korea
(May 2) North Korea’s Pyongyang Broadcasting Service (PBS) insisted, “Japan has brought the issue of kidnappings to the table of even the six-party talks, which is intended for discussion of the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula, and has been hampering progress in the talks by making persistent, nonsensical claims.”
(May 3) The North’s PBS said, “The imperialist US used all sorts of means to do whatever it possibly could to our nation [North Korea] using its power, but it ended up keeling before our [the North Korean] people, and now people around the world are seeing, through the reality of our nation [North Korea], the undefeatable mighty power of Songun [military-first] politics that crush the enemies’ high-handed policies,” emphasizing, “The imperialist US should accurately recognize the global trend that is flowing toward self-reliance and peace and jettison its anachronistic high-handed policies.”
(May 3) North Korea’s Central News Agency (KCNA) reported, “Kim Yong-il, premier of the [DPRK] cabinet, sent a congratulatory telegram to Martinho N’Dafa Cabi, who had been appointed prime minister of the Republic of Guinea-Bissau.”
o Inter-Korean Issues
(May 1) North Korea’s Pyongyang Broadcasting Service stressed, “Patriotism is the ideological and spiritual foundation for the great unity of the entire nation, and the entire nation, by courageously stepping forward into square of great unity of the entire nation with a communal heart of patriotism, ought to accomplish the feat of unification of the homeland.”
(May 1) North Korea’s Central News Agency (KCNA) reported, “The May Day North-South Worker’s Reunification Convention for the Realization of the June 15 Joint Declaration took place in the City of Changwon, South Korea from April 29 through May 1.”
