o Inside North Korea

(Apr. 25) The North Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported, “With Kim Jeong-il as well as Kim Yong-nam, president of the Presidium of the Supreme People’s Assembly, Cho Myong-rok, director of the General Political Bureau of the Korean People’s Army, and Kim Yong-il, prime minister, among those present, a military parade took place to mark the 75th anniversary of the founding of the Korean People’s Army at Kim Il-sung Square on April 25, followed by a torchlight procession of youth and students called ‘Gun Barrels of Victory’ that night.”

(Apr. 25) The North Korean Central Broadcasting Station reported, “On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the Korean People’s Army, Kim Jeong-il, along with Kim Kyok-sik, chief of the general staff of the KPA and Vice Marshal Kim Il-cheol, visited Kumsusan Memorial Palace on the morning of April 25, and then attended a congratulatory performance by the Korean People’s Army Merited State Chorus.

(Apr. 25) The North’s KCNA propagandized, “After watching the grand mass gymnastics and artistic performance Arirang, participants in the 1st WHO Volunteer Medical Service Training for the Southeast Asian Region commented that it was a ‘great performance.’”

(Apr. 28) North Korea’s Rodong Shinmun said, “Well aware of the importance of water security projects in [reaping a large] annual harvest, agricultural workers in every corner [of the nation] are engaged in a battle to secure more water as well as not to waste even a drop.”

o Outside North Korea

(Apr. 26) The North Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported, “A joint communique concerning the re-establishment of diplomatic relations between [North] Korea and Myanmar was announced in Yangon, Myanmar on April 26.”

(Apr. 27) The North Korean Central Broadcasting Station (KCBS) said, “President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono of the Republic of Indonesia met with our nation’s [North Korea’s] Foreign Ministry delegation led by Kim Yong-il, deputy foreign minister [of the DPRK], who were visiting the nation, and had a friendly talk on April 24.”

(Apr. 29) The North’s KCBS reported, “On the campus of a university in Virginia in the US on April 16, an unprecedented gun crime took place in which the perpetrator murdered 32 people, and societal attention was focused on the authorities’ wrongful policy regarding gun control.”

o Inter-Korean Issues

(Apr. 29) The North Korean Central Broadcasting Station denounced, “At present South Korea’s belligerent forces, under [the umbrella of] the imperialist US’s active support and instigation, are bent on increasing military power and modernizing the armament, and are thus driving the state of [inter-Korean] affairs into a phase of confrontation and war.”

(Apr. 29) The North Korean Central News Agency reported, “In order to participate in the May Day North-South Workers’ Reunification Convention for the Realization of the June 15 Joint Declaration to be held in Changwon, South Korea, our [North Korea’s] delegation headed by Won Hyong-guk, vice chairman of the Central Committee of the Joseon [North Korean] General Federation of Trade Unions, flew from Pyongyang on April 29.”
